Basically, OTN is a communication backbone built up by nodes which are interconnected by a double optical fiber ring. Because of the double ring structure, OTN guarantees an unparalleled degree of reliability. Should one fiber ring or node fail because of any reason (fire, rupture,...), then the other ring and nodes take over immediately, thus keeping the whole network operational round the clock. The system will always find a way around any problem without affecting its users. The OTN nodes also offer redundancy of the main components such as power supplies, common logic cards and optical modules.

Guaranteed bandwidth

OTN allocates a dedicated amount of bandwidth to each application. Each application has its own 'lane' or layer in the fiber tunnel, with guaranteed bandwidth. This way your SCADA, CCTV, telephony and other applications run smoothly on the OTN, without interfering with each other.

Plug and play

OTN is a 'plug&play' concept in the true sense of the word and guarantees operational simplicity. It offers full connectivity with all current standards, which makes it very user friendly. Operating an OTN involves no complex routines, nor extensive parametrising to program a connection. Each node has several ports where the peripherals can be plugged in through interface cards. You just pick the right interface and plug your equipment into the system. This fact eliminates the need for additional converters, codecs or multiplexers.

Large distances

OTN is the perfect choice for operations involving long distances or large areas. An OTN backbone can stretch up to 2000 km (1200 miles) and the nodes can be more than 100 km (60 miles) apart.

Easy network management

OTN treats every application as if it was running on its own network. The integration takes place in the control room through a user-friendly OTN Network Management System (OMS) which controls the network down to interface level. This reduces the need for training and the risk of errors.
